Choosing a Water Filtration System

Choosing a Domestic Water Filtration System

Thanks to the growing population and expanding industries our water supplies are becoming more polluted, making every drop of water precious.
The rapid growth in bottled water sales is testament to the fact that consumers want to drink water that is clean and free from chemicals and potential contaminants such as chlorine, rust, sediment, Giardia and Cryptosporidium that may be in our municipal water supplies.
However, purchasing bottled water is expensive. Environmentally, the issue of plastic bottles and their introduction into our waste system is making all concerned consumers question the purchase of bottled water.
In-home water filter systems can provide the same quality of water as bottled water but at a fraction of the cost – and at only cents per litre. They are convenient, space saving, environmentally friendly and cost effective – an essential inclusion in today’s modern kitchen.
However with the myriad of options available it can be overwhelming to figure out what you really need and want. Basically there are two main types of domestic water filters available: counter top or dual undersink.
Below are some tips to help you choose the system that’s right for you.

>> Counter Top Water Filtration System

Counter Top Water Filtration Systems are designed for improving the quality and taste of drinking water. Because of its compact size and no plumbing required, it is perfectly suited for rental homes, units or for anyone on the move. The cartridge will reduce sediment, chlorine, taste, odour and organics and 99.95% of giardia and cryptosporidium cysts.

>> Dual Undersink Water Filtration System

These systems use two filtration stages; the first stage is a sediment cartridge which is used to filter dirt particles like sand, silt and rust. The second stage is a carbon cartridge which is used to reduce chlorine taste, odour and also organics.
The cartridge supplied in these systems will also filter 99.95% of giardia and cryptosporidium cysts. It also reduces certain pesticides while delivering full flavour for drinking, tea, coffee, beverages and cooking.
The installation of undersink water filtration systems  requires a plumber and would ordinarily take around 1-2 hours depending on the cupboard space.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CHANGE MY FILTERS?

Most filters are recommended to be changed after 6 months, however some may last longer. Generally if a cartridge requires changing before this time it will be evident by a drop in water quality (taste or odour). Marking your filter with the installation date and filter type will make it easier for you when it comes to replacing the filter cartridge.
